Joint RuminOmics seminar enjoys high attendance at EAAP Warsaw

On August 31st 2015 a full day seminar was organised on Climate Smart Cattle Farming and Breeding at the Annual Meeting of the European Association of Animal Science (EAAP). METHAGENE and RuminOmics were responsible for organising this day, together with the Cattle Commission of EAAP.

To start the session, Martin Scholten presented an overview of climate smart cattle farming followed by a paper on achieving economic and socially sustainable climate smart farming by Eileen Wall. Management and system aspects were then considered by Troels Kristensen.

The joint session had one of the highest attendance at the EAAP Annual Meeting in Warsaw.

In the afternoon session, Jan Lassen presented a Genome-wide association study for methane emission in Danish Holstein cattle. Initial results from the unique 1000 cow study were discussed by Phil Garnsworthy, particularly the variability among dairy cows in methane, digestibility and feed efficiency. Tim Snelling discussed the RuminOmics technologies and methane, a mixture of metagenomics and metaproteomics.

The seminar had an attendance of more than 200+ delegates and was the most attended session at EAAP Warsaw apart from the Plenary.
